Announced on IAUC
8394 on 27 Aug 2004, this was the 10th discovery by veteran
comet discoverer Don Machholz in California, using a 15cm
(6") Criterion Dynascope. An interesting account of the
discovery is given by the discoverer here.
The image above was taken 16 hours after discovery, in morning
nautical twilight, with the comet just 10° above the horizon.
Further positions of this comet were obtained from Great Shefford
on Aug 31st, September 1st, 4th and 12th, conditions only being good
on September 12th, when the following image was obtained, when the
comet was 13° above the horizon and the Sun still 15° below. The
scale is the same as the image above, but the field is wider at
15'x10'.
